Just a couple of years ago, a few bars and clubs were opened which were designed to attract the Japanese Bangkok sex tourist. Apparently the experiment went well, as today a small red light district in Bangkok called Taniya - in Bangkok's red-light area known as Patpong - is now a fully-fledged street of Japanese clubs, karaoke bars and cabarets.
Any cab driver in Patpong will now know this area simply as Taniya. This area now caters without shame directly to Japanese sex tourists and devotes entertainment types as well as food and drink to Japanese tastes. A few streets over, on Patpong 1 and 2, you’ll find mainly European, American and Australians dressed in shorts and tee-shirts. But not in the Taniya district. There you will find the many Japanese tourists dressed more like businessmen in suits who look more like they are going to a board meeting than out for a night on the town.
While Western tourists arrive ready to party in every sort of conveyance, the Japanese tend to show up in limousines with darkly tinted windows. You’ll find them walking or driving down the streets evaluating the girls before disembarking and making their move to a favored night spot. Knowing this, the girls in this area may be dressed in a Japanese favored costume such as a nurse, or looking like baby geisha girls in mini-kimonos or dressed to the nines in evening dresses looking like high paid courtesans. If you go there, don’t be surprised to see girls wearing makeup in the Japanese style.
In Taniya, expect to find the ever favorite Karaoke Bars. At the Karaoke Bars you are likely to see a red faced Japanese “businessman” belting out “New York, New York” followed by the enthusiastic clapping of Japanese-esque Thai girls who actually seem to be having a good time. But then again, who doesn’t smile when a guy who has had a bit too much to drink takes on Sinatra with a Japanese accent?
Among the many Karaoke Bars and clubs of all assortments, you’ll find Japanese restaurants serving excellent food in Taniya. The food is reasonably priced and it is worth checking the menus which are usually posted outside of the establishments. There you’ll also find some favored Japanese liquors and beers including the all time favorite, Asahi.
If you are one of the lucky ones to visit Bangkok, be sure to visit the Taniya district for a glimpse at, or to partake in, the many entertaining outlets provided by the creative Thai catering to Japanese Bangkok sex tourists.
