Patpong has a not so good reputation as there are some bars there that you are best to avoid as they will try to rip you off in some of the upstairs bars. There are also other areas around Bangkok that are interesting but those are the main areas. For first timer's to Thailand for sex vacations Bangkok is a great place to get your feet wet as well as other parts of your anatomy the bangkok hotels are cheap and plentiful and the areas are really safe as long as you watch crossing the streets.
